How To Link Your NIN To Your SIM On (MTN, Airtel, 9mobile and Glo)

On Tuesday, December 2020, the Nigerian Communication Commission released a press statement on the implementation of new SIM registration rules.

Following the earlier directive on the suspension of new SIM registration by network operators, ​all network operators to require all their subscribers to provide valid National Identification Number (NIN) to update SIM registration records.


According to to the statement by the Nigerian Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami) The submission of NIN by subscribers to take place within two weeks (from today December 16, 2020, and end by 30 December 2020). After the deadline, ALL SIMs without NINs are to be blocked from the networks.

A Ministerial Task Force comprising the Minister and all the CEOs (among others) as members is to monitor compliance by all networks. ​Violations of this directive will be met by stiff sanctions, including the possibility of withdrawal of operating license.

The general public is hereby urged to ensure that their NINs are captured in their SIM registration data. All inconveniences which might be occasioned by this directive are deeply regretted.

Here's how you can link you NIN to your SIM

First of all, you need to know you Nationa Identification Number (NIN) obviously, This can be found on your National Information Management Commission (NIMC) slip or card. If you don't have this then you must go to the nearest NIMC centre to enrol for your card. You can check the nearest enrollment centre close to you by visiting https://www3.nimc.gov.ng/nimc-enrolment-centres/ and click your desired state from the list. 

If your card or slip is currently not in your possession, you can retrieve you NIN via USSD by simply following the steps below:
  • Dial *346# 
  • From the options displayed, select “NIN Retrieval”, by typing in ‘1’, if you are using the same phone number you enrolled with for your NIN
  • Follow the steps displayed on your screen and provide the required inputs
  • Note that using this service attracts a N20 (twenty naira) fee (deducted from your phone credit balance).

Linking you NIN to your SIM

If you have gotten you 11-digit NIN, you can now proceed to the next phase by following the step below.
  • For MTN users simply dial *785# and follow the onscreen instructions or visit their website https://mtnonline.com/nim/ and fill out the form.
  • For Airtel users simply dial *121*1# and follow the onscreen instructions or visit their website https://www.airtel.com.ng/nin and fill out the form.
  • For 9mobile users simply dial *200*8# and follow the onscreen instructions or visit their website https://9mobile.com.ng/nin and fill out the form and capture your passport.
Now you wait for a verification message. And that's all, you've successfully linked you NIN to your SIM.
